Membership / Legal aspects
Admittance policy (for regular membership): 

Only registered interior architects (see above) with an additional 3 years of professional practice, proven by portfolio

Other categories of membership: 

Students Candidates (max. 5 years; registered interior architects, but without sufficient professional practice) Senior (10 years of membership and not longer engaged in practice) Associates (Persons or companies that are working in the field of interior architecture and have at least one qualified member employed)

Rules of Conduct: 

Apply for members. They are available in Dutch and are published on the BNI website.

Contract guidelines: 

Standard contracts between interior-architect and Client are available for members in Dutch and English language.

Fee guidelines: 

Are not allowed for by law.

Salary guidelines: 

Are available. A Collective Labor Agreement (CAO) is applicable for all employees of registered architects (not interior architects) www.architectencao.nl

Professional liability: 

Is regulated by law. Standard contracts offer a limitation of liability, so the use of these contracts is highly recommended. A professional liability insurance is obligatory for members.

VAT, sales tax: 

Local name: BTW. Applies to all services by interior architects. The current percentage is 19%.

Professional Practice
Business licensing: 

No licenses are needed to establish a business. Registration with tax-authority and social-security is obligatory. See for information www.belastingdienst.nl/english/business.html

Working permits: 

All citizens of EU-member states, as well as Norway, Iceland and Switzerland have a right to live and work or study in the Netherlands. For general information look at: www.overheid.nl/guest/sites/

Building permits: 

Are needed for all building projects, including interior alterations. Permits are submitted by the local municipality. Everybody can apply for a building permit.

Building code: 

National building code is called "Bouwbesluit 2003". It contains rules and regulations concerning health, safety, usability, energy use and environment, that apply to all buildings (new and existing). Additional rules and regulations
Zoning plan: 

Zoning plan is called 'bestemmingsplan' and rules the place, size and use of buildings. Information at local municipality, department of planning.

Assembly permit: 

For public buildings (including restaurants etc.) with an occupancy of more than 50 a 'gebruiksvergunning' is required. Information at local municipality, department of buildings.

Accessibility for disabled persons: 

In addition to the 'Bouwbesluit' a law on equal treatment of minorities requires for arrangements that may affect interior design.

Durability, environmental design: 

Apart from 'Bouwbesluit' no regulations.

Occupational health and safety: 

Working conditions for employees are regulated in the 'ARBO' law. This includes adaptability of furniture, smoke-free areas, etc.

HACCP: 

Is applicable on all businesses with regard to the trade in or preparation of food, including restaurants, shops, etc.

Historic preservation: 

Preserved buildings (and interiors) are covered by the 'Monumentenwet'. Information at local municipality.

Health and safety statement for design phase: 

Working conditions for employees are regulated in the 'ARBO' law. This includes adaptability of furniture, smoke-free areas, etc.

Site regulations: 

Information at local municipality, department of buildings.

Fire regulations:
