Membership / Legal aspects
Admittance policy (for regular membership): 

For regular membership the requirement has so far been 4,5 years education from one of our two national Colleges of Art (Oslo or Bergen) – or equivalent education from abroad. Applicants with lower qualifications have also been accepted when their application has been supplemented by relevant evidence of practice and projects (as evaluated by a special committee). A BaMa structure was introduced this year; the first students have commenced their Master studies this autumn (2004). MA may be specified as the future minimum requirement for regular membership.

Other categories of membership: 

Student members and senior members (retired professionals).

Rules of Conduct: 

NIL has a set of Rules of Conduct which are also available in English and are published on our website (www.nil.no)

Contract guidelines: 

Standard Contracts for design commissions as well as manufacturing and sales rights are to members. NIL also has a standard Confidentiality Agreement in English.

Fee guidelines: 

Not applicable. Norwegian legislation prohibits co-operation on fees.

Salary guidelines: 

There is a Norwegian Union of salaried architects, interior architects and landscape architects which issues certain guidelines on salaries.

Professional liability: 

Interior architects are fully liable for any loss resulting from their work and specifications. Standard contracts exist and have been agreed by the organisations. Professional liability insurance is recommended to members.

VAT, sales tax: 

National name: MVA. Applies to all services by interior architects . The current percentage is 24%.

Professional Practice
Business licensing: 

The only requirement for setting up any kind of business in Norway is that it must be registered with the National Register of Business Entities (The Brønnøydsund Register) which also includes a VAT registration.

Working permits: 

All non-Norwegian nationals arriving from abroad are required to obtain a work permit.

Building permits: 

Planning and Building Act/ National Office of Building, Technology and Administration requires permit for design of constructional parts of buildings, of facades and installations. Website: www.be.no

Building code: 

Regulated in The Planning and Building Act/National Office of Building, Technology and Administration, which requires that the professionals obtain approval for building, either at the local or a national level.
